Getting Back On Track

Posted on April 21st, 2009.

Last weekend was Spring Break for most of us here in Utah County… and with that comes fun activities, traveling out of town, projects around the house and of course, a schedule that is completely thrown off!

Like many others around here, we went out of town for the weekend to enjoy some warmth and sunshine! And although we ALWAYS make it a point to take healthy foods with us whenever we travel, and cook our own meals instead of eating out all the time, it seems like temptations still manage to come around, making it difficult to stick to our health goals.

As I have met with my clients over the last two days, many of their stories were just the same as mine. They didn’t eat or exercise as well as they should have over the extended weekend… and that left each of them feeling bummed, blubbery, and blah! {And I was no exception!}

In talking with each of them about getting back on track with their eating and exercising goals, I realized that I needed to take my own advice as well! So here are some of the things I told them, and hopefully, this information will help YOU… the next time you fall off the “healthy” wagon and need to hop back up!

1. Don’t beat yourself up

This one is an important one! You have to remember… we are all humans, and we all make mistakes! There is no such thing as a perfect eater or a perfect exerciser – so cut yourself some slack when you goof up a little and have a bit of compassion on yourself!

2. Understand that it’s not as bad as you think

Many of us are gluttons for punishment… and although we know better, we still get on the scale to see the damage done whenever we get off course. {Bad idea people! Bad idea!} Most likely the scale WILL be up! But that doesn’t mean your actual fat percentage has gone up! It definitely takes more than one crazy weekend to make you gain several pounds of fat. So understand that it’s really not as bad as you think!

3. Decide NOW to get a fresh start

I love Mondays, because it’s a great day to start fresh with goals of any kind! But… you don’t have to WAIT until the next Monday rolls around in order to get back on track with your eating and exercising goals. Do it NOW! Start now! If you struggle for a few days with your health goals, it’s okay… just commit yourself to being better… and get on it! You’ll feel so much better if you do!

So there you have it… My three simple suggestions for how to get back on track whenever life gets in the way of your health goals! Believe me… we all get thrown for a loop at one time or another! Even us personal trainers do! Like I said earlier… Nobody is perfect!

If you happen to fall off the HEALTH wagon, here’s a bit of advice: Get Up, Dust Yourself Off, and Get Right Back On Track! You definitely have it in you to do so!

Hi Liz,
Well…I fell off that health wagon too over a week long break and vacation. I am trying not to beat myself up (so I’m doing okay there), but what I really liked here is the “Decide NOW to a fresh start”. This is where I have to focus, so thank you for this – I’m packing my veggies as we speak for a healthy lunch today. It’s a busy day today, so tomorrow I commit to getting out and exercising – I’m rejuvenated to get out there and live healthy. You’re awesome Liz!
