Falling in Love With Weight Training
As a personal trainer, I mainly focus on strength training with my clients each time we meet. Building muscle is such an important part of a complete fitness program for several reasons and I believe that everyone – no matter how old or at what fitness level – should regularly participate in some sort of weight bearing activity. Weight training is extremely beneficial for many reasons, and here are just a few reasons:
1. It shapes and tones muscles, which creates a more lean and jiggle-free body. {And who wants to jiggle?}
2. It prevents diseases such as osteoporosis, diabetes and obesity.
3. It builds strength and can improve balance, which is very important as we grow older.
4. The more muscle mass you have, the more fat your body burns.
Knowing that, doesn’t it just make you want to go pump some iron??
When I first fell in love with weight training, I was about 18 years old. I wouldn’t say that I was a wimp at the time, because I had been a cheerleader all through my senior year and was used to lifting and tossing other human beings into the air!
However… after I had consistently done weight training for about four weeks, I was starting to see and feel muscles that I had never seen or felt before! It was awesome!
Now that I get to train others, and watch them go through the same “falling-in-love-with-weight-training” experience as I did, it just thrills me! In fact, whenever I have been working with a client for a while, and start to see the newly developed bicep muscles in their arms, I get absolutely GIDDY!
So if YOU are not currently doing any form of resistance training, be sure to start adding it into your fitness program today! You don’t even have to have any equipment in order to do so! Think: push-ups & squats! There literally are hundreds of exercises you can do without a lot of equipment… and by just investing in a few different sizes of dumbbells, your options are even greater!
Go fall in love with weight training! It will be a relationship that you will always be grateful for!

Hey Liz! I’m a friend of Jaimi’s and she told me about your blog. I’m a trainer here in Springville. I love how you write and I love reading what you have to say!

I couldn’t agree more Liz! And…I’ve been bad about doing this consistently the last couple of months. So, I’m taking this as you giving me a virtual kick to get back at it on a regular basis…

Liz,
I am strong believer that physical “dimension” is the bedrock of personal power. Sadly I was less than active in this space lately. Wheat encourages me is this: “You don’t even have to have any equipment in order to do so”.

The older I get, the more I need weight training. I lift ten pound free weights every other day. I also work out on the treadmill for about 40 minutes a day. But I love when my muscles respond. I hate the jiggle and it’s going away. I’m 56 years old and I have lots of energy and strength. And although I’m past menopause, I have no osteoporosis.
