Soft & Sexy Skin

Posted on February 10th, 2009.

I am a firm believer in making time for yourself, to refresh and recharge your batteries each and every week. Life can be so crazy and hectic at times, that if we don’t relax and do something kind for ourselves, we end up feeling tense and full of stress. Countless studies have shown that chronic stress can lead to weight gain, depression, a weakened immune system and a lower quality of life.

So I thought I’d share with you one of my favorite “ME” things to do, that really leaves me feeling rejuvenated and happy.

I am a sucker for soft skin! I absolutely LOVE lotions, potions, creams, and concoctions that I can smother all over my body to make my skin feel soft and smooth. During the winter months it seems to be more of a challenge to keep my skin feeling supple and moist – with the dry, hot air, blowing out of the heaters everywhere. But I have discovered a solution! It’s a homemade SUGAR SCRUB!

People! This stuff is amazing! And the best part about it is, it’s stuff you already have lying around in your kitchen. To make this fabulous SUGAR SCRUB, you simply mix the following ingredients together:

1/4 cup canola oil

1/2 cup sugar

A few drops of Almond or Peppermint Extract (just to make it smell yummy)

1 tsp. Epsom Salt

(The Epsom Salt is optional. I just like to include it because of it’s healing properties.)

After your sugar scrub is mixed together, you are ready to go! I always like to use mine in the bathtub or shower, just after shaving. You put a little in your hands and smother it all over your wet skin. Oh. My. Gosh. Not only does your skin feel amazing afterwards, but the actual “scrubbing” part feels oh – so – good! It’s like a mini massage!

I especially love pampering myself with a weekly sugar scrub, because even in the dead of winter, I am constantly wearing tank tops. Whether I’m working out or teaching classes, my skin is always exposed to the dry air. Not only does it make my skin FEEL better, it also LOOKS better because the dry, itchy skin is gone. Another benefit to sugar scrubs is that it’s a great thing to do right before applying self tanning lotions. It opens up the pores in your skin and allows the tanning lotion to sink in more evenly.

So even though it’s the middle of winter – you can look like you just got back from Mexico with soft, juicy skin and a radiant glow of sunshine! What better way to reduce stress and tension than that? Seriously – you’ve GOT to try this and just SEE how fabulous you feel! (Both inside AND out!)

P.S. Be sure that you clean your tub or shower really well, AFTER applying your sugar scrub. I’ve almost caused my husband to break his back a time or two because of the oily residue left behind! oops!

What do YOU like to do to relieve stress and tension? What is your favorite thing to do for “ME” time? Do you take “ME” time regularly? Let me know! I’d love to hear!

This sounds great. I need some more Canola oil, but will make it soon. Do you have any recipes for good facial scrubs/exfoliators?

ohhh Liz this was awesome! I didn’t have any almond or mint, so i added just a tad bit of vanilla! Even my 4 yr old daughter loves this, she has very dry itchy skin right now and it made her feel so much better!

Jen – I wish I had something great for facials, but I don’t. The only thing I’ve ever used from my kitchen to put on my face is raw honey! LOL! And it actually is great for the skin!
Autumn – That’s cute that your 4 year old liked it. I have never even tried it on my little girl, but I should because she hates lotion and this would help her skin get moisturized! DUH! I can’t believe I didn’t think of that sooner.
And Mark – Here’s a valentines day idea for you! LOL! Make this scrub and give it to your wife and tell her to go soak in the tub! I’m sure she’ll love it! :)
