Health Too Complicated?

Posted on December 12th, 2008.

I am excited for today’s post, because it was written by a health and fitness expert that I highly respect and admire. Let me introduce my guest blogger for the day, Blake Hagen.

Blake graduated earlier this year from Brigham Young University with a degree in Exercise Science with an emphasis in Fitness and Wellness Management. He is passionate about his wife (how cute is that?), preventing chronic diseases through healthy lifestyle changes, finishing triathlons, golf, soccer, cooking healthy food, working hard and going fast. (I can relate to the “going fast” part.) He and his wife reside in Utah and are expecting their first child in March.

I personally enjoy reading his blog and value his thoughts and opinions regarding health. I especially like the article he wrote for today’s post and hope you feel the same. Thanks Blake!

“Every day we hear about new products that will help us get healthier. We turn on the TV or open a magazine and find that a new fad diet has come out, “health” supplements promising every kind of health benefit are available for purchase, and a “revolutionary” new exercise contraption will “blast” away all of our unhealthiness. What happened to the basics of eating healthier and moving more?

Why do we need a magical remedy for our unhealthiness? Why is it that we feel that a pill “full” of antioxidants will be better for us than the nutrients in real fruits and vegetables? Why is it that we think a protein supplement will be better for us than eating normal, healthy sources of protein? Most supplements don’t even have to be approved by the FDA so whatever is claimed on the label may not even be accurate.

Today we all want the quick fix for our health. As far as I know, the quick fix does not exist. Getting healthier and reaching our health goals takes patience, determination, courage, and desire. No one can make the changes for us –it comes down to us. We can find all the excuses in the world to not go for a walk or run today, or we can fight those thoughts and get out and do it. We can find tons of reasons for why we ought to start our healthy eating plan next week, or we can fight the excuses and start today.

There are so many little things we can do every day that will help us reach our health goals, whatever they may be. Whether it’s losing some weight, getting stronger, lowering our blood pressure, or just getting more fit, every day counts. Stick to the proven basics of regular exercise (all kinds) and better nutrition and you can reach your goals.

To me it is unfortunate that there are so many companies taking advantage of people that want to be healthy. I am not saying that every health/fitness product is junk, but I think we are getting further and further away from the basics of healthy eating and regular exercise and more towards the “miraculous” wonder-products that solve all of our problems. With all these products claiming to “fix” this, or “cure” that, trying to be healthy does sometimes seem complicated. It doesn’t need to be.

We don’t need fancy-dancy gadgets, gizmos or pills that promise unrealistic things. We need to get back to the basics.”

What a wonderful post… and such a great reminder that if something seems too good to be true, it usually is! There really isn’t a better substitute for eating “God-made” foods and getting daily exercise.

Hi Liz!
Great to see Blake here – I’ve recently discovered his blog, and find it to be fantastic!
Blake – great post! What I find sad is that there are all sorts of health and fitness magazines out there – sold to people looking, presumably, to improve to health. And yet, it seems like they nearly all have these “quick fix” products being advertised throughout the magazine. Wouldn’t it be better for the magazines to promote “Florida oranges”, or “Georgia peaches”, or “local farmers markets”, or ….”something truly healthy”. I agree completely with everything you’ve said Blake. It’s about eating right (and “real”) foods, and really doing the exercise – exercises that have been around for a long time. Not the latest machine that claims it will help you get “rock hard abs” in 2 weeks…

Here’s to putting in the time, and eating real, and healthy foods…

[...] Cathy AND Liz for naming Super Healthy Kids in their fabulous blog list.  I’m not good at blog tagging [...]

You’re right Liz – that is a great article. The unfortunate thing is the market is only supplying what people want. They say they want to eat healthy, but they won’t cut up and eat fruits and vegetables. They’ll spend a half an hour to make hamburger helper, but not 5 minutes to cut up some veggies. I don’t get it.

Amazing post! Unfortunately being healthy requires discipline and hard work – that means 90% of the population can’t do it..
