Fitness Camp Update

Posted on December 4th, 2008.

For all of you Utah County girls… here is a little update on the Fresh Start Fitness Camps that will begin in only FIVE more weeks!

We have had a lot of people show interest in the fitness camps and already have several people registered. (Yay! You don’t understand how excited I am for this!) Anyway, if you would like to join this challenging fitness camp, make sure you register early because there is a limit of only 15 women per session.

The reason why there’s a limit on the fitness camps, is because I want this to be as close to PERSONAL training as possible! I want the only difference between one-on-one sessions and the fitness camp sessions is that there just happens to be 14 other women working out along side of you! {LOL!} That means I will be focusing on each client individually as best as possible. My priority will be on the personal goals of each camp member and I will be closely involved as they work toward those goals. During class, I will make sure that everyone is performing the exercises with the proper form… which is something that often gets overlooked in regular group style classes. I will also pay close attention to the threshold of each member during class… If I see someone starting to wimp out at 10 pushups yet I believe they can do more, I will give them the push necessary to keep going. {Don’t worry, I’m not a “get-in-your-face-and-scream-at-you” type of trainer! I promise… my clients don’t think I’m mean. :)

There is a small adjustment to the Monday, Wednesday, Friday session that I wanted to mention. Originally, I had it starting at 9:00 in the morning. However, several of the local elementary schools start at 9:00 am which made it hard for some women to attend. To solve this problem, we’ve moved the class back 15 minutes so it now starts at 9:15 am and ends at 10:15 am.

So here’s a shameless plug to encourage anybody who wants to be healthier in 2009 to sign up NOW for the six-week Fresh Start Fitness Camp. I will be offering a free trial class during the first week of January for those who are interested but not quite ready to commit. If that’s something you’d be interested in be sure to check back often for details… or, you can subscribe to my feed and that way you’ll be notified immediately as to when that class will be offered.

If you have any questions at all regarding the fitness camps, please don’t hesitate to email me. I’d be happy to explain things in more detail.

Hope you have a HEALTHY day!

Hi! Love your blog! How does your camp differ from Michael Banks’? They seem really similar. . .

During the camp will you incorporate specific cardio intervals into the sesseions? Or will you try to keep heart rates up exclusively through weight training?

I’d love to know more. Thanks!

Hi Lia – First of all, Thank you! I’m so happy to hear that you enjoy my blog. :) It’s been really fun to have. Now… about your next question. I attended Michael Banks classes probably four years ago, so I’m not entirely sure if he’s doing things exactly the same now as he did back then, or if he has changed things up a bit. However, Michael Banks is a fabulous trainer with tons and tons of experience! I loved his classes because he was so dang funny and they gave me an awesome workout! The way I’m structuring my classes will be somewhat similar to the way his were done (at least back when I attended)…. but I hope to throw my own twist into the camp.

I don’t know if Michael is doing this now (he didn’t back when I attended), but in my camps, each member will have a one-on-one appointment with me so we can take body measurements, body fat%, etc. I will also discuss what the goals are for each individual so I have a solid idea of what people are needing help with. Those appointments and the information I receive from each client, will help me when I actually design the classes. I plan on keeping everyone’s heart rate up throughout the entire class – due to resistance training – but I will include short little breaks in between the exercises to stretch the muscle we just used, to catch our breath and to build up the energy to push ourselves on the next rep. And yes, I do plan on throwing in some short bursts of high intensity intervals as well.

Another difference is the email coaching I’ll be doing and the nutrition class. Again, this is something Michael didn’t do back when I attended his class, but I plan on giving camp members “Healthy Habit” assignments that I expect them to incorporate into their lives. Of course, each member can decide for themselves on how dedicated they want to be… and if they don’t want to accept the assignments I offer, that’s up to them. But I hope (I’m still in the process on this) to have some kind of a reward or drawing for those who did complete the assignments… because really, complete health goes way beyond what you do in a workout class. That’s just a teeny bit of the puzzle.

Of course, the obvious difference between my camp Michael’s is that my class is not held at a commercial gym – and I’m female. :) For some women, that is a major factor that plays into whether or not they decide to join an exercise program. Most of my personal training clients are women who absolutely will not go to a commercial gym… so I hope to offer something a lot less intimidating to them.

I wish I could say that I am as good of a trainer as Michael is… but honestly? We are not even in the same category! LOL! He has been training clients for EVER and I’ve only been training clients for 10 months. (Quite a big difference there!) I can’t wait for the time when I feel like I have as much knowledge as he does, but until then I just take it step by step, do my best and try to be a valuable help to my clients.

Whew! Well, I hope that answered your questions and that you have a better picture now of what my fitness camps will be like. If you have any other questions, please feel free to ask!

hello, if I can add my perspective here…as I’ve trained with both Liz and Michael…Michael is super at what he’s doing, but it’s really hard for him to check form with 25 in a class, where here, with a limit to 15, I think we’ll have a lot of attention. I can’t wait to start! I love Liz’s email coaching and have done it for a couple months, it’s a great piece to your overall success…I’m glad to see she’s addressing nutrition, training, and email accountability.
