Invest in Your Health: Strategies for a healthy body in a not-so-healthy economy.

Posted on October 2nd, 2008.

If you are like most Americans, you may be feeling a bit anxious about the future during this unsettling economic time. Watching your investments shrink, wondering if your job is secure, hoping our country isn’t headed for disaster, leaves you feeling frustrated, stressed and unsure of what to do next.

One of the main reasons why situations like this make us feel so uncomfortable and tense is the fact that we are not in control. As much as we’d like to, we cannot make a few simple choices that will reverse the stock market crisis and give us financial rewards.

There is however, one thing you will always have control over, and that is the level of your physical fitness. Your weight, your physique, and your endurance level, is all up to you and the decisions you make regarding your health. It’s not up to politicians you don’t trust, crazed stock market analysts or even opinionated news reporters… The only person qualified to vote as to whether or not you are going to “bail-out” of a workout session is you!

Since nobody else is calling the shots when it comes to your health, you need to be proactive! You certainly don’t hand your stomach muscles over to an “abdominal advisor” and hope that in a few years they’ll come back to you strong and sexy. The only way you will get the health benefits you want is by consistently making wise choices – both in the kitchen and in the gym – and by not allowing stress to compromise your health.

During times of extreme stress, however, many people allow their health and fitness goals to fall to the bottom of their priority list. They busy themselves with worries and feel there is no time for exercise. They become emotional eaters and fill up on unhealthy foods. They lose sleep over their concerns and end up feeling tired and worn down.

Sure, we don’t have control over what the stock market will do next. But we do have control over our health, and we can definitely keep it from plummeting. If you are feeling the effects of a questionable economy, take your frustrations out on a pair of 15 pound dumbbells by doing bicep curls or chest presses! Grunt and yell if you have to! Lifting weights will make you feel empowered and strong enough to face difficult challenges that come your way.

And rather than sitting in front of the TV, biting your nails as you watch each and every news report, get out and go for a brisk walk. Get your heart pumping and breathe some fresh air into your lungs. Notice the beauty all around you. And remember, that no matter what happens to the economy, life is beautiful and we are surrounded with blessings… Your body being one of them!

So be sure to invest in your health. You’re the only one who can, and by doing so, you will be SURE to reap valuable dividends now AND in the future!

Well said! It is definetly harder to stay motivated when your stress level goes up. I went on a nice walk/jog/stroll this morning and it felt so good to get out and enjoy some fresh air and let the worries of this world take back seat for a while!

The funny thing is, most of the time I write these posts because they are things I need to hear myself… so the fact that they motivate someone else is like icing on the cake for me! Thanks for your comments!

I agree. It’s so easy to stuff your mouth when stressed. I’ve made a conscious choice to exercise at least six times a week on my treadmill. It definitely helps me to deal with the stress, most of which I have no control over.

I can testify to the great benefits of walking. It’s a “must do” in my daily life. I’ve heard from time to time that walking a mile burns just a many calories as running a mile Is that true?
