Super Snack

Posted on September 12th, 2008.

I just wanted to share a quick-to-make, super yummy and very HEALTHY snack that I have been enjoying this week. My kids and I love it! It is full of nutrients and is sure to give you energy and satiety to help you through your day.

There’s not really a name to it because it’s just stuff I’ve thrown together because it sounds good to me. If you want to offer an idea as to what we could call it, be my guest! :) This is what you do:

Put 1/4 to 1/2 cup low-fat, vanilla yogurt in a bowl.

Top with:

- Half of a banana (chopped)

- Half of a peach (chopped)

- 1 to 2 tablespoons ground flaxseed

- Small handful of walnuts

And THERE you have it! So easy… and so yummy! It’s ridiculous how easy it can be to eat healthy! You just have to believe it and experiment with different things to create nutritious snacks you enjoy.

This snack has all three components of “HEALTHY-NESS” which is why I like it so much. Yogurt is a great source of PROTEIN and has more than most people realize. The important thing to remember when buying yogurt is to buy a brand that is not full of sugar. Personally, I like to buy organic yogurt… but there are several brands that are low in fat and low in sugar. When you are shopping for yogurt, take a few minutes to compare labels so you know what you are buying is the best option for you.

Obviously, the fruit is a wonderful ingredient in this snack. Fruit offers a dose of HEALTHY CARBS that gives you energy throughout the day and also provides FIBER. Everybody could add more fiber to their diet! Fiber provides bulk – which leaves you feeling satisfied. (With fiber, you won’t get any of this: “I just ate, so how come I still feel hungry?” stuff.) Fruit is also a natural form of sugar… so your sweet tooth can be satisfied without adding empty calories to your diet.

The ground flax seed and walnuts add Omega-3 fatty acid’s to the snack… which is GOOD FAT! Flax seed and walnuts both aid in lowering bad cholesterol levels and provide antioxidants and fiber. Plus, they just taste so good!

ENJOY!
