Drinking A Glass Of FRESH

Posted on August 8th, 2008.

One of my favorite things to do when I’m folding laundry is to watch Oprah. I especially enjoy it when her guest for the day is Dr. Oz. He is a brilliant doctor that values PREVENTING health problems before they arrive, by eating nutritious foods, exercising and taking care of your body. He is so full of wonderful information, I wish I could shrink him up and carry him around in my pocket!

Anyway, several months ago he gave the recipe for a green drink that is absolutely wonderful and packed with nutrients! I had to laugh when Oprah tasted it, because she said, “It’s like drinking a glass of FRESH!” And sure enough, when I tasted it myself I knew exactly what she meant.

This is the recipe Dr. Oz gave when he was on her show, but after making it so many times, I have tweaked it a little bit to make it a bit more appealing to my own taste buds. That’s the wonderful thing about green drink recipes…you can alter them a little here and there until you find a taste that YOU like. After all, if you don’t like it, you’re not going to drink it right?

Glass of FRESH Green Drink

Juice of 1/2 lemon (or 1 tablespoon lemon juice)

Juice of one lime (or 2 tablespoons lime juice)

2 cups spinach

2 cups cucumbers

1 head of celery

2 apples

1/2 inch fresh ginger root

1 bunch parsley

I like adding 6 or 7 ice cubes to the mix and instead of adding an entire head of celery, I only add about half a head of celery. I also don’t love the taste of parsley, so I only include about a handful in my shake… not an entire bunch.

This recipe makes a whole lot – which is great because then you can store some in the refrigerator for later. My mom has one of those really expensive juicers (those kind that are like miniature power tools) and although it’s a piece of cake to whip this smoothie up in one of those, it’s not necessary to have. I make mine in a regular (cheap) blender, and although it takes a bit of persistence, it does eventually chop it all up nicely.

(Obviously, you don’t have to add the cute little pineapple on the side and the fun bendy straw, but hey – it makes me feel a little tropical and exotic when I drink my super yummy, super healthy green drink!)

Enjoy!

Way to go Annie! I promise…eating lots of fruits and veggies is going to make your insides feel so clean and light – not to mention how light the outside of you will feel! :) In all of my local grocery stores, flaxseed is in the same isle as the flour and sugar. It’s in a small yellow bag, and the brand is Bob’s Red Mill. Good luck finding it. If your grocery store doesn’t have it, try your local health food store.

Okay, I tried this drink this morning!
Is this an acquired taste? I was so hopeful that it would be ‘ok’ and that I would really feel like I was drinking something totally wonderful. (which I know it is) But, boy…I couldn’t get that down..I’d rather just snack on a bowl of veggies rather than drink it.
So, is this an acquired taste that I will get used to? Hopefully so!! I love eating healthy and feeling healthy but I just couldn’t do this one.
Any advice?

Oh, found the flax seed..I actually found it in Walmart in all the vitams…It’s all ground up though…Hmmm…I used it in a spice cake I made for the family..Couldn’t even tell it was in there…
Having a hard time with Vanilla Rice Milk…Too sweet!!
Any advice on that one as well?
I’m full of questions today…Sorry

Krista – I’m glad you found the ground Flaxseed! It’s such a healthy ingredient to have on hand. About your drink of “FRESH”… I’m not sure if it’s an acquired taste or not. I enjoyed it the first time I had it, however I knew right off the bat I wouldn’t like that much parsley, so I put a lot less of that in it. You may just need to adjust some of the ingredients or leave some out all together. I know that ginger root, celery and parsley have very unique tastes that have a tendency to over power other tastes. Maybe go lighter on those and go heavier on the spinach, apples and cucumbers. You could also add a little water to it, so the lemon and lime juice isn’t so tart. The other day, when I was having some, I poured in about 1/4 cup of Strawberry crystal light and it sure tasted good! Another thing you can do to sweeten it up is add half a banana. You want to make sure though, that it has more veggies than fruit, mainly because fruit has a lot of natural sugars to them. Don’t give up yet – just try some new variations on it until it’s something you enjoy. :) And I have been told that with Rice Milk, you either like it or you don’t. I happen to like it, but if it’s too sweet for you, you may like to just add regular milk to your smoothie. :) And don’t apologize for the questions! I LOVE them all! :)

Hi Liz: I really like both your blogs. (Loved your mommy picts!)Question–do you make FRESH in a blender or juicer? I made some yesterday in my Champion juicer, but then after reading the post again, thought maybe I was supposed to make it in a blender instead. Also, have you ever worked with anyone with thyroid problems? Thanks for all the ideas!! Joy
