Why You Should Be Eating Flaxseed Every Day

Posted on August 6th, 2008.

Time and time again, I have been asked the question, “What the heck is Flaxseed and WHY should I eat it?” Well, flaxseed is quite the amazing little seed that provides HUGE health benefits. I learned about flaxseed a few years ago when I was struggling with a bad case of the winter blues. I was reading some books about how to solve seasonal sadness and one of the things it mentioned was flaxseed.

Flaxseed is a wonderful source of Omega 3 fatty acids, fiber and other vitamins and minerals. Studies have shown that consuming flaxseed regularly will greatly reduce bad cholesterol (LDL) levels and triglycerides. Flaxseed also fights inflammation, depression, cancer, high blood pressure, constipation, menopausal symptoms, heart disease, and diabetes. Flaxseed has also been found to strengthen the body’s immune system.

The best part about flaxseed is that it actually tastes good! At my house, we like to add it to our cereal, protein shakes, muffins and waffles. We also love to sprinkle it on yogurt and many times my kids will ask for more “sprinkles” if they think I didn’t give them enough. Flaxseed is such an easy food to add to your diet and it only requires a couple of tablespoons per day to reap the benefits, so give it a try. I think you’ll be glad you did.

I’ve recently started adding a couple of TBSP flaxseed meal to all of my baked goods. The best part is that no one (including myself) notices! It just blends right in.

Sounds silly (I know) but where do I actually purchase flaxseed? I would love to give it a try…

Krista – That’s not a silly question at all! :) You would think that flaxseed was something you would only find in a health food store, but I have found it in all of my local grocery stores on the flour and sugar isle. I use the Bob’s Red Mill brand and it is in a yellow, plastic package. Good luck!

ok- i think i bought the WRONG thing- lol.. i found the FLAXSEED, but it is a “WHOLE” seed, so it kinda looked like teeny tiny seseame seeds.. is this right? or was i supposed to get the “meal” kind??? lol.. i added some to my sandwich, couldn’t even tell it was in there… =)

LOL! Yes Annie, I usually get the ground flaxseed, but the whole seeds that you got are just as good! (Just a bit bigger and harder to hide.)

quick note-
i was able to “blend in blender” the WHOLE seeds, to make it EXACTLY like the “meal/ground stuff”… i just blended in a dry blender- about 1 cup at time- it rastes TOTALLY different and GOOD- i am a “nuts” freak- so this makes me think i am splurging! (it tastes nutty to me… go figure)

So Liz, where can I get flaxseed at? I have been wondering for quite some time. By the way, I am still working on getting my lower back better. It’s a bad case this time :(

Lily, Macey’s has it in their baking isle. It’s on the second to top shelf (I think) in white and yellow bags. The brand I get is Bob’s Red Mill. There is whole flax seed and ground flax seed. I like to get the ground, but if you get the whole, you can just blend it. I am so bummed that your back is still causing you problems. Just a few weeks ago, I bought an inversion table for my lower back pain and it is helping a TON! You hang upside down for a few minutes every day and the gravity gently pulls your vertebrae apart, to get rid of any pinches. If you are feeling a pinching pain or like you just want your hubby to pull on your feet – you should seriously call me and just come over and use this! It would be fun to meet you in person anyway, and if it helped you, that would be even better! I’m being serious too – so if you ever decide you want to hang upside down like a bat (lol!) call me and we’ll “HANG” out! (ha ha!)
