Mindless Eating Leads to Weight Gain
Mindless eating is so easy to do, and unfortunately it is one of the main culprits that leads to gaining weight or not being able to lose weight that you so desperately want to get rid of. Think about it… How often do you find yourself eating when you’re not even hungry?
If you have kids, how often do you eat up the remains of the mac & cheese that they didn’t finish? Or grab a handful of M&M’s as you walk by the candy dish at the office? Or how often do you give in to the divine smells of food, even though your stomach is saying “No! I’m too full!” The most classic example of mindless eating is when you’re at the movies, nibbling on pop-corn and before you know it, it’s all gone and your stomach is way over-stuffed.
Even as I write this, my mouth is watering because of the delicious smell of zucchini bread baking in the kitchen. My tongue is really wanting a big old slice, but if I take a minute to think about how my tummy feels… well, it would tell me not to because I’m still full from dinner. It’s like a little battle going on inside of my body. Tongue says, “eat it! eat it!” Stomach says, “No! Don’t do it! I’m too full!”
Which one usually wins the battle? Hopefully, the stomach wins more often than the tongue does. However, we are all guilty of mindless eating at one time or another. Try to pay more attention to when you eat and why you are eating. If you are eating simply because food is in front of you or because you are bored and don’t have anything else to do, you are setting yourself up for weight gain and frustration.
Every time you go to put something in your mouth, pause for a minute and think about whether or not you are truly hungry. If you are, eat up! If you’re not hungry though, take a rain check and save those calories for a time when your body really needs them.
